He earned his Medical Degree at the University of Health Sciences, the Chicago Medical School, before beginning his Transitional Internship at IU. During his internship his attention moved toward Internal Medicine. Upon completion of his internship, he entered and completed internal medicine training at IU, eventually joining the faculty and becoming an Assistant Program Director. He completed UCLA's Medical Acupuncture training program and has begun weaving this into his clinical practice that includes the Integrative Pain Center in the IU National Center of Excellence in Women's Health. While outside work, the lion's share of time and energy are devoted to his twins.

She also serves as Director of Evaluation for the IU National Center of Excellence in Women's Health, and is a member of the Indiana University Cancer Center.

She received both her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from Ball State University. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Science degree from Indiana University in 1991. She recently completed a National Library of Medicine post-doctoral fellowship in health informatics at the Regenstrief Institute for Health Care.

Dr. McDaniel's clinical background is in critical care nursing, and she has over 20 years experience teaching undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Dr. McDaniel was one of the first faculty members to develop and teach web-based courses at the School of Nursing, recognized as a national leader in teaching with technology.

The focus of her research is on the use of technology to support smoking cessation and nicotine dependence treatment. In a series of pilot studies, Dr. McDaniel examined how to change clinical practice patterns in the acute care setting to promote smoking cessation intervention. During her fellowship, she developed computer algorithms to deliver tailored patient information to enhance "bedside" smoking cessation intervention and nicotine dependence treatment for hospitalized smokers. Currently, her research has moved beyond using information technology to enhance decision-making by clinicians to consumer health informatics, using informatics methodologies to improve health care decisions by consumers, i.e., the decision to quit smoking.

Clinical Interests
Metabolic Bone disease including: osteomalacias, osteoporosis, Paget’s disease of the bone, hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, etc. I am particularly interested in taking care of individuals who have inherited metabolic bone disorders.

Research Interests
My general area of interest is the genetic aspects of metabolic bone disease. In this regard, I have performed clinical and basic studies of metabolic bone disorders. Much of my effort has focused on using positional cloning techniques to locate and clone genes that are responsible for these disorders. These efforts have led to the recent cloning of the PEX gene, which is responsible for X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets. Studies are currently underway to map and clone the genes responsible for autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets and osteoporosis. We are also performing studies that focus on finding genes that play a role in determining peak bone mineral density.
